Brentano, Lujo. History and Development of Gilds and the Origin of Trade Unions, Research and Source Works Series. New York: Burt Franklin, 1969 <1870>. [From an original academic work published in 1870 containing five chapters: The Origin of Gilds [sic], Religious (or Social) Gilds, The Town-Gilds or Gild-Merchants, The Craft-Gilds, The Origin of Trade Unions. The work traces the history of trades guilds from possible origins of the word "guild" (from the Danish "gilde" - feast, banquet) to the first statutory guilds in the beginning of the 11th century (apparently religious brotherhoods) and on to the trade unions of the first quarter of the 19th century. No bibliography is provided, but there are extensive footnote references to primary and secondary sources.]
